Fotoverslag korte reizen

Van de kortere reizen maken we een fotoverslag in plaats van een blog. Dit is een korte impressie van wat u zoal ter plaatse kunt doen aangevuld met wat praktische informatie. Aangezien we enkel de plaatsen beschrijven waar we zelfs geweest zijn is dit geen volledig overzicht van alle toeristische mogelijkheden. Onze fotoverslagen zijn 2-talig (Nederlands en Engels). Wij hopen dat onze fotoverslagen u zullen inspireren.

Photo report short trips

From short trips we will create a photo report instead of a blog. This is a short impression of interesting sights and activities. As we will only list the places where we have been ourselves this list will not be a complete overview of all touristic possibilities. Our photo reports are 2-lingual (Dutch and English). 1. Calete de Fuste

Holiday resort town a 15 minute drive from the airport. It is a nice place with all you need but not very special. However if you want the drive across the whole island and visit both places in the north and in the south it is the perfect location. It is about 1,5 hour drive either way.

There is a nice coffee bar in the center called Cafe Nero.

1. Calete de Fuste

Vakantieresort op ongeveer 15 minuten rijden van het vliegveld. Het dorpje heeft alles wat je nodig hebt maar is niet heel speciaal. Echter wanneer je het hele eiland wilt rondrijden en zowel plaatsen in het noorden als in het zuiden wilt bezichtigen dan is dit de meest ideale locatie. Het is ongeveer 1,5 uur rijden in beide richtingen. Er zit een leuk koffie zaakje in het centrum genaamd Cafe Nero.

2. Playa de Sotavento

5 Kilometer lang zandstrand. Dankzij de wind die er vaak waait is het een favoriete plek voor wind- en kitesurfers. Ieder jaar zijn er op deze plek ook kampioenschapswedstrijden. Om hier te komen volg je de FV2 en neem je de afslag bij KM 72 en volg de weg. Deze leidt naar het parkeerplaats van "Playa de Sotavento". De laatste 200 meter is gravel (goed te doen met een gewone auto). De parkeerplaats is ook favoriet bij camperaars die hier overnachten. Let wel: de lagune is het mooit bij laag water.

2. Playa de Sotavento

5 Kilometer long sandy beach. The place is often very windy so a favorite sport for windsurfers and kite surfers. Championships are held here yearly. To get here follow the FV2 and take the exit at KM 72, then follow the road. This road leads directly to the carpark of "Playa de Sotavento". The last 200 meter is gravel (doable with a normal car). The car park is also often used by campers who stay the night here. Note: best to visit the lagoon at low tide.

3. Faro Punta de Jandia

Faro Punta de Jandia is de vuurturen op het meest zuidelijke puntje van Fuerteventura. Een fotogenieke plek maar het grootste avontuur is misschien wel de weg er naar toe. Om hier te komen houd je bij Morro Jable rechts aan (niet rechtdoor naar de haven). Na nog een klein stukje asfalt wordt het al snel een gravelweg. In totaal is het dan nog 20 km gravel tot aan de vuurtoren. Op het gravel gedeelte passeer je nog 1 splitsing (na ongeveer 12 km); houdt hier links aan richting Puertito. Vanaf hier rij je helemaal tot het einde waar de vuurtoren staat. Hoewel gravel is het prima te doen met een normale auto. Je zult zeker niet de enige zijn.

Morro Jable - Faro Punta de Jandia = 20 km of gravel. Doable with a normal car. The road takes you all the way to the southern tip to the island. The area here is dry and arid. Almost like a lunar landscape. An adventureous drive. We loved it.

FV-30 - Pajara via Betancuria towards Puerto del Rosario = Kronkelende weg van goed asfalt. Dit is veruit de mooiste weg op het eiland. De uitzichten zijn adembenemend op sommige plaatsen. De weg loopt dwars door de bergen in het binnenland. Op bewolkte en regenachtige dagen is het weer hier slechter dan aan de kust.

3. Faro Punta de Jandia

Faro Punta de Jandia is the lighthouse located at the southernmost tip of the island. A photogenic place but the biggest adventure is the drive up here. To get to this place you have to keep right at the crossing in Morro Jalbe (do not take the road to harbour). After this crossing the tarmac will soon end. From here it is only tarmac (20 km) to the end. On this stretch you will pass one more cross road (after about 12 km). Make sure you keep left here in the direction of Puertito. Although the road is unpaved (gravel) all the way it is no problem to do this with a normal car. You will not be the only one.

4. Puerto de la Cruz

Last village before reaching the southernmost tip to the island. We loved the village. It has a remote "wind- blown-and-of-the-world" vibe.

Laatste dorpje voordat je het meest zuidelijke puntje van het bereikt. We vonden het een heerlijk dorpje om even doorheen te slenteren. Er hangt een relaxte en een "einde-van-de-wereld-door-zee-en-wind-geteisterde" sfeer.

5. Villa Winter

Voor wie de documentaire serie "Hunting Hiltler" op History chanel heeft gezien weet dat met steun van de Spaanse dictator Franco, gevluchte Nazi's welkom waren in Spanje en zo ook op Canarische Eilanden. De meest hardnekkinge geruchten gaan over Villa Winter. Een huis, gebouwd als een fort en gelegen tussen de lavastenen op een berghelling aan de bijna verlaten zuid-westelijke kust van Fuerteventura. De villa is gebouw door de Duitse ingenieur kolonel Gustav Winter, Nazi-spion en vertrouweling van Hitler. Dankzij de strategische liggen zou het gebuikt zijn voor geheime militaire acties en als provisiestation voor Duitse onderzeeërs. Volgens de overleveringen zou het zelfs een operatiekamer hebben gehad waar gevluchte hoogeplaatste Nazi's door middel van plastische chirurgie een "ander gezicht" konden krijgen. De documentaire vertelt zelfs over de mogelijkheid dat ook Hitler hierheen gevlucht zou kunnen zijn. Een inmiddels openbaar gemaakt vertrouwelijk document van de Britse geheime dienst vertelt van een piloot van de Luftwaffe die Hitler op 29 april, de dag voor zijn zelfmoord, uit Berlijn zou hebben gevlogen. In de jaren erna kwamen diverse meldingen binnen van mensen die hem hier gezien zouden hebben.

De waarheid zal nooit aan het licht komen, maar het feit dat de woning en het gebied eromheen in die periode was uitgeroepen tot militaire zone en dat het voor lokale bewoners verboden was om ook maar enigzins in de buurt te komen voedde de geruchten. En dankzij het inmiddels geaccepteerde bewijs, dat Fuerteventura een basis is geweest voor Duitse onderzeeboten tijdens de WOII en ook dat het kleine vliegveld aan de kust vlakbij de villa tegen het einde van de oorlog veelvuldig 's nachts werd gebruikt houdt de speculaties levend. Hoewel de villa zelf niet bijzonder spectaculair is, maakt het buitengewoon bizarre verhaal van wat zich er hier mogelijk zou hebben afgespeeld, het een bijzondere plek. En de rit er naar toe is prachtig. Villa Winter ligt in hetzelfde gebied als Punto de Jandio en ook de weg hier naar toe is onverhard. Om hier te komen neem je op de gavelweg vanaf Morro Jable naar Punto de Jandio na 12 kilometer de aangegeven afslag naar Covete. Kort na de kruising klimt de weg omhoog om vervolgens aan de andere kant het eiland weer af te zakken naar zee. Vergeet niet te stoppen op het hoogste punt. Het uitzicht met zicht op de zee aan beide kanten van het land is spectaculair en een van de mooiste van het hele eiland. Zo gauw je voorbij de laatste bocht komt ontvouwt zich een wijdse vergezicht met aan een kant door lavasteen zwart geblakerde bergkam en aan de andere kant een azuurblauwe zee en witgeel zandstand. De foto's die we maken komen niet in de buurt van werkelijkheid. Geen enkel geheugenkaartje is groot genoeg voor zoveel natuurschoon. Vanaf de top slingert de weg langzaam weer richting zeeniveau. Villa Winter, dat vanuit de verte slechts een wit stipje op een berghelling is komt langzaam steeds dichterbij. Het laatste stukje omhoog is een behoorlijk hobbelig off road pad. Hij is te doen zonder 4x4 maar als je jezelf niet vertrouwt dan kun je beter lopen. Op de parkeerplaats voor het huis leven veel eekhoorns die tam genoeg zijn om nootjes uit je hand te eten.

6. Cofete beach

Prachtig strand niet ver van Villa Winter. De zee en branding aan deze kant van het eiland zijn onstuimig en de storming erg sterk. Zwemmen wordt afgeraden, maar dat doet aan de schoonheid van de omgeving niets af. Vlakbij het strand, deels opgeslokt door het zand, ligt een bijzondere begraafplaats. Een paar lavastenen en een houtkruisje markeren de graven.

7. Majanicho beach

Klein vissersdorpje in een beschermde baai. Het dorpje ligt op ongeveer 7 kilometer van Lajares en heeft geen bars of restaurants. Het is er buitengewoon rustig. Een bijzonderheid hier zijn de tafels en stoelen in de zee waar lokale bewoners eten en drinken of hun vis schoonmaken. Ze zouden zich bevinden aan de westkant van de baai. Echter toen wij er waren was het eb en was er niets te zien. Majanicho is ook een van de plaatsen waar je popcorn achtige korrels kunt vinden die het strand bedekken. De bekendste plek is Popcorn Beach wat meer naar het noorden, maar ook hier vind je de korrels die onstaan door samengeklonterd dode algen.

8. Faro del Toston

Mooie vuurtoren met dichtbij diverse lava pools. Door de verschillende diepten en ondergrond hebben ze allemaal een andere blauw of turquoise kleur.

9. Los Lagos beach

Leuk strand met enkele ondiepe gedeelten. Tegenover het strand vind je Nazzuro. Een leuk restaurant met goed eten.

11. Ajuy

Een klein vissersdorpje met enkele leuke restaurants waar je goed vis kunt eten. Het fotogenieke strand bestaat hier uit zwart lava zand waarbij de witte huizen en kleurrijke houten bootjes prachtig afsteken. Ajuy is ook de uitvalsbasis van waaruit je de lavagrotten kunt bezoeken. De grotten behoren tot de oudste natuurlijke monumenten op het eiland. Om de grotten te bereiken moet je het smalle looppad volgen dat rechts van het strand begint. Het laatste deel tot in de grot bestaat uit enkele steile trappen. Misschien minder gechikt als je wat slechter ter been bent.

12. Pena Horadada

Prachtig stukje strand. Deze keer van stenen met een grote rotsboog. Het strand is bereikbaar via een wandeling vanuit Ajuy. Je passeert dan eerst de lavagrotten. Voorbij de grotten is het nog 3-4 kilometer over een vlakte tot aan het strand. Een andere optie is rijden, wat wij hebben gedaan. Om hier met de auto te komen neem je hoofdweg F-621 richting Mezquez. Komend vanaf de kust krijg je na enkele kilometers een smalle onverharde weg aan de linkerkant. (herkenbaar aan enkele hoge palmbomen). Let op: de afslag is erg onduidelijk en makkelijk te missen. Vanaf de afslag loopt de weg, die vanaf hier onverhard is, eerst een klein stukje door een droge rivierbedding en daarna over een vlakte. Wij hebben het pad gevolgd tot het te slecht werd voor onze auto. De laatste 2 kilometer hebben we gelopen. Op het strand troffen we een 4x4 camper die hier al een paar dagen stond. Dus heb je een stevige auto kan kun je ook helemaal doorrijden.

13. Salinas del Carmen

Klein vissersdorpje waar in het verleden zout werd gewonnen middels van verdamping van zeewater. In de hoogtijdagen was zoutwinning één van de belangrijkste economische pijlers van het eiland maar naarmate deze dure wijze van zoutwinning steeds onrendabeler werd verdween de industrie. De zoutpannen zijn er nog en kunnen worden bezocht. Bij de zoutpannen vind je ook een klein museum. Wanneer je alleen de pannen en niet het museum wilt bezoeken dan kun je dit doen vanaf de kant van het dorpje. Dit is gratis. Je kunt er zo naar toe wandelen. Wanneer je gaat voordat het museum opent (10 uur) dan heb je de hele plek voor jezelf. Bij de zoutpannen vind je ook een groot walvisskelet.

14, 15, 16 Molinos (windmills)

Een van de architectonische kenmerken van het eiland zijn de diverse windmolens. We hebben er enkele bezocht Alle windmolens hieronder waren gratis te bezoeken.

17. Morro Jable

Druk en toeristisch vakantieoord. Het stadje heeft een leuke boulevard met veel winkels, bars en restaurants. Het badplaatsje heeft ook een prachtig lang strand, een walvisskelet en een vuurtoren. Wanneer je vanaf het skelet het looppad naar het strand volgt dan passeer je "Chiringuito El Faro de Jandia"; een erg leuke strandtent om the chillen en wat te drinken. Ook het eten zag er goed uit.

18. Mis Abuelos tapas in Morro Jable

Zin in echte traditionele tapas? Dan is dit kleine familierestaurant in Morro Jable een aanrader. Het wordt geroemd als een van de beste op het eiland. Ga niet te laat! Ze zijn open voor lunch en sluiten vroeg (ca. 5 uur)

19, 20. Dunas de Corralejo & Flag Beach

Nabij Corralejo vind je de hoogste zandduinen van het eiland. Het gebied is nationaal park waar zand en wind allesbepalend zijn. Ergens langs de kust hier vind je Flag Beach; een beroemd strand onder windsurfers en kitesurfers.

21. Corralejo

Grootste badplaats op het eiland. Hoewel erg toeristisch heerst erg een laidback sfeertje dat mensen aantrekt van alle leeftijden en allerlei pluimage. Van all inclusive toeristen tot hippies en surfers. Dankzij deze grote variatie is er een evenzo grote verscheidenheid aan bars en winkels. Voor elk was wils. In de straat vind je naast de standaard souvernirs shops ook vele boetiekjes met handwerk, grote kleding winkels maar ook kleine surfwinkeltjes en naast de grote fast food ketens vind je kleine bars die nog lokale lekkernijen serveren. De mix van alles maakt van Corralejo een leuke plek om wat rond te hangen. Vanuit de haven vertrekken boten naar Lanzarote of Isla de Lobos.

22. Vega de Rio Palmas &

Ermita de Nuestra Senora de la Pena

Iets ten zuiden van Betancuria ligt een kleine palmoase (Vega de Rio Palmas). Vanuit hier kun je een leuke wandeling maken naar de kapel van Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Rots. De wandeling duurt ca. 40 minuten (tot de kapel) en is goed te doen (beter niet op slippers).

Morro Jable - Faro Punta de Jandia = 20 km gravel. Als je gewoon rustig rijdt is het prima te doen met een gewone auto. De weg leidt naar het meest zuidelijke puntje. De omgeving is ruig en droog en lijkt haast een maanlandschap. Het is een avontuurlijke rit. Wij vonden hem geweldig on te doen.

Morro Jable - Cofete / Villa Winter = ca. 20 km gravel. Het laatste deel vanaf het uitzichtpunt is een prachtige route met een magisch uitzicht. Vanaf het uitzichtpunt kun je de zee aan beide kanten van het eiland zien.

FV-104 - Puerto Lagas - Corralejo = Deze weg loopt dwars door het Parque Natural de Corralejo en de Dunas the Corralejo.

5. Villa Winter

Those who watched the documentary series "Hunting Hiltler" on History Chanel have seen that with the support of the Spanish dictator Franco, Nazi's who fled the liberated parts of Northern Europe were welcomed in Spain and thus also on the Canary Islands. The most persistent rumors are about Villa Winter. A mansion, built as a fortress and located on a lava rock covered mountainside at the deserted south western coast of Fuerteventura. The mansion was built by the German engineer Colonel Gustav Winter, a Nazi spy and confidant of Hitler. The story goes that thanks to its strategic location the place was used for secret military missions and served as a provisioning station for German submarines. Oral tradition claims that the mansion even had a fully equipped surgery room where high ranking Nazi's who fled here after the war could get a "new face" by performing plastic surgery. The documentary even claims that Hitler himself might have fled here. Confidential documents of the British secret services that were released claim that a pilot of the Luftwaffe, flew Hiltler out of Berlin the 29th of April, which would be a day before is suicide. During the years after there were various statements of people who claimed that they saw him here. The truth will probably never come to light, but the fact that both the mansion as well as the surrounding area were military zones where is was forbidden for locals even to get close gave rise to the rumours. And thanks to nowadays widely accepted proof, that Fuerteventura indeed once was a basis for German submarines during WOII and that the small airstrip close to the mansion saw a lot of nighly activity near the end of the war the speculations are kept alive. Although the mansion itself is not very spectacular it is the story about what might have occured here that makes it a special place. And the road to get here is amazing. Villa Winter is located in the same area as Punto de Jandio and also this road is unpaved. To get here take the dirt road from Morro Jable to Punto de Jandio. After about 12 kilometer turn right towards Covete (there is a sign). Shortly after the junction the road climbs. Don't forget to stop at the highest point. The views from here are magnificant; probably the best of the island. As soon as you past the last corner an amazing landscape unfolds with black lava rock covered mountains on one side and clear blue sea and white sands on the other side. From here you can even see the sea at both sides of the island. There is no memory card big enough to capture this beauty. From the top the road descends back to sea level. Villa Winter, that from a distance looks like a white dot in the landscape slowly gets closer. The last meters up to the mansion is a rough and bumpy off road track. It is doable without 4x4 but if you do not trust yourself you can also walk this last part. At the parking near the mansion are a lot of wild squirrels which over time got very used to people. You can feed them by hand if you bring some nuts.

6. Cofete beach

Beautiful beach not far from Villa Winter. The sea is rough and the current very strong at this side of the island. Therefore swimming is discouraged. The beauty however makes it definitely worth a visit. Close to the beach is a small partially by sand dunes covered cementary. Some lava stones and a wooden cross mark the graves.

7. Majanicho beach

Very small fishing village in a protected bay. This tiny village located about 7 km from Lajares, has no bars or restaurants and is extremely quiet. A curiosity here are tables and benches located in the sea where locals eat and drink or clean fish. They should be located on the west side of the bay. When we arrived it was low tide and we did not see any. This is also one of the places where you can find popcorn like structures that make up the beach. The most famous place is popcorn beach further north but also here you can find the particles, which are died pieces of algea clotted together.

8. Faro del Toston

Nice lighthouse with some stunning shallow beach pools. The various dephts of the lava pools give the water all shades of blue and turquoise.

9. Los Lagos beach

Nice beach with some shallow parts. Opposite the beach you can find Nazzuro. A nice restaurant with good food.

10. El Cotillo

Traditioneel vissersdorpje en een van de beste plekken op het eiland om vis te eten. La Vaca Azul zou het beste restaurant moeten zijn. Richting het zuiden heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de ruige bergranden die de ruige kust hier flankeren. De hoge golven aan deze kant van het eiland trekt veel golfsurfers. Vanaf de rand nabij oude wachttoren kun je de surfers bezig zien op de golven beneden.

10. El Cotillo

Traditional fishing village with and one of the best places on the island to eat fish. La Vaca Azul seems to be the best place in town. Looking towards the south you will have an amazing view on the rugged mountain ridges that borders the coast. The high waves on this side of the island attract a lot of surfers. From the fortress tower you can watch them riding the waves below.

11. Ajuy

Small fishing village with some local restaurants that serve good fish. The picture perfect beach here is made of black lava sand that make the white painted housed and colorful boats the lie in sand stand out beautifully. Ajuy is also the gateway to the lava caves which are the oldest natural monuments on the island. To reach the lava caves you have to follow a small path starting at the right side of the beach. Getting into the cave you have to climb some stairs that may not be suitable for the less agile.

12. Pena Horadada

Beautiful rocky beach with a giant rock arch. To get here you can hike from Ajuy. You will then pass the lava caves first and continue to this beach (about 3 - 4 km hike). Or you can drive. We did the last and drove here. To get here by car you have to take the tarmac FV-621 towards Mezquez and then after a few kilometers take the small sandtrack to the right (there are a few large palmtrees near this junction). Be carefull it is easy to miss. From here it is a dirt road that first crosses a dry riverbed and this follows the plain towards the rocky beach. We drove until the track got too bad. We walked the last 2 km. There was a 4x4 camper staying at the beach. So if you have a strudy car you can drive down all the way. Up to the last 2 km the track was doable by normal car. Just drive slowly.

13. Salinas del Carmen

Small fishing village where in the past also salt was harvested via vaporisation of seawater. In its heydays it was one of the economic drivers of the island but as this was an expensive production method the salt industry vanished. The pans luckily still remain and can be visited. Next to the pans is also a small museum. If you are not interested in the museum you can also just enter from the side of the village and visit on your own and free of charge. If you do so before the museum opens (before 10 am) you have the whole place to yourself. Next to the pans there is also a skeleton of a big whale.

14, 15, 16 Molinos (windmills)

One of the architectural features you will find across the island are the molinos (windmills). We visited a few. All can be visisted free of charge.

17. Morro Jable

Touristic and buys holiday resort. The place has a nice boulevard with lots of shops, bars and restaurants. The resort has a nice long beach, whale skeleton and lighthouse. When you follow the pathway onto the beach you will pass "Chiringuito El Faro de Jandia", which is a nice place to relax and enjoy a drink.

18. Mis Abuelos tapas in Morro Jable

Fancy some traditional tapas this family run tiny restaurant in Morro Jable is one of the best if not the best on the island. Definitely woth a visit! Don't go too late. They close early.

19, 20. Dunas de Corralejo & Flag Beach

Near Corralejo you find the highest sand dunes on the island. The area is a natural parque where sand and the wind are in control. Here you also find Flag Beach; a very famous beach amongst windsurfers and kitesurfers.

21. Corralejo

Largest beach resort on the island. Although very touristic it still has a nice laidback atmosphere that attracts all types of people of all ages, from all inclusive tourists to hippie style surfers and this also counts for the wide range of shops and bars that cater the needs of all these different types of customers. In the streets you will find the 13 in a dozen souvenir shops but also nice boutiques with handmade arts, big clothes stores and small surf shops and fast food restaurants or small bars that serve local dishes. The mix of everything make it a nice place to hang around. From the harbour here you can catch a boat to visit Lanzarote or the small Isla de Lobos.

Scenic drives - 2

Morro Jable - Cofete / Villa Winter = ca. 20 km dirt road. The last part past the viewpoint is the nicest with some amazing views. From the viewpoint you can see the sea at both sides of the island.

FV-104 - Puerto Lagas - Corralejo = This road takes you straight through the Parque Natural de Corralejo and the Dunas the Corralejo.

Scenic drives - 4

FV-30 - Pajara via Betancuria towards Puerto del Rosario = Curvy road on good tarmac. This is by far the most scenic road on the island. The views are breathtaking in some places. On days with clouds and rain the weather might be worse here than along coast.

In La Ampuyenta op een veldje achter een gebouw vind je een groot hoofd dat lijkt op de hoofden gevonden op de paaseilanden.

23. La Ampuyenta - sculpture

In La Ampuyenta on a field behind a building you will find a sculpture that has a remarkable resemblance to the heads found on Easter Island.

24. El Barranco de Los Enamorados

El Barranco de Los Enamorados betekent letterlijk ravijn van de geliefde. Het is een sprookjesachtig landschap van fossiele zandduinen uitgegraven door water en gevormd door de wind. De ravijnwanden, op sommige plaatsen meer dan 20 meter hoog bevatten nog sporen van voormalig zeeleven. De ravijn is bereikbaar via een gravelweg vanaf El Cotillo. Zeker te doen met een normale auto maar voorzichtigheid is geboden. De andere toegangsroute vanaf het noorden is een stuk uitdagender bevat hier en daar diep zand. Deze route is meer geschikt voor een 4x4. De wandeling heen en terug (komend vanuit El Cotillo) is circa 6 kilometer en duurt zo'n 2,5 uur.

24. El Barranco de Los Enamorados

El Barranco de Los Enamorados betekent letterlijk ravine of the beloved. It is an enchanging landscape of fossil dunes that have been excavated by water and shped by the wind. De walls of the ravine, some more than 20 meters high, still contains traces of marine life. To get here you have to take a dirt road from El Cotillo. Doable with a normal car but drive carefully as the track is a bit rocky here and there. The other access from the noth is more challenging and because of deep sand better suitable for a 4x4. The hike to the ravine (coming from El Cotillo) is 6 kilometers in total (in and out) and takes about 2,5 hours.

25. Los Pescadores in Pozo Negro

Voor ons gevoel aan het einde van de wereld, daar waar het asfalt eindigt en een zwart kiezelstrand begint ligt het slaperige vissersdorpje Pozo Negro, dat zwarte put betekent. De baai bestaat slechts uit een kleine verzameling witte huizen die sterk afsteken bij de omgeving die veelal bestaat uit zwart gesteente afkomstig van een duizenden jaren oude lavastroom die hier de zee bereikte. In een van die huizen bevindt zich Los Pescadores, een klein maar veel geprezen visrestaurant. Het restaurantje is kleiner dan verwacht en het door weer en wind verweerde kustgras en plastic meubilair zien er wat armoedig uit, maar wie voorbij dit alles kijkt treft een voortreffelijke keuken. Het is meer dan de moeite waard en de rust en stilte van het nauwelijks door toerisme aangetaste dorpje is heerlijk.

25. Los Pescadores in Pozo Negro

What feels like the end of the world, where the tarmac ends and a black pebble stone beach begins, this is where you find the sleeping fishing village Pozo Negro, that means "black well". The bay consists of a small number of white houses that strongly contrast with the surrounding black rocks from an ancient lava flow that reached the sea here. It is in one of these houses where you find Los Pescadores, a small but commended fish restaurant. The restaurant is smaller than expected and the weathered plastic furniture and artificial grass make it look shabby, but if you look beyond that you will find and excellent kitchen. The place is definitely worth the trip and the peace and quite atmosphere of the unspoiled village is wonderful.

26. La Antalayita

Onderweg naar Pozo Negro vind je ook La Antalayita, een historisch belangrijke acrcheologische plek. Middenin de lavastroom en gemaakt van zwarte rotsen vind je er de overblijfselen van oude structuren waaronder tombes en huizen. Met vermoed, dat de nederzetting ooit werd bewoond door de Mahos; de oorspronkelijke eilandbewoners die hier leefden voor de komst van de Spanjaarden in de 15e eeuw.

26. La Antalayita

On your way to Pozo Negro you will find La Antalayita, a historical significant archeological site. Located in midst of the lava flow and built from black rocks you can find the remains of ancient structures like tombs and stone houses. The site is believed to have been home to the indegenuos Mahos people, Canary Islanders that lived here before the arrival of the Spanish in the 15th century.

27. Faro de Entallada

Prachtige nog werkende vuurtoren gelegen op een 196 meter hoge klif met een onvertroffen uitzicht. Bij helder weer kun je er ongeveer 21 zeemijlen ver kijken. De weg naar de vuurtoren kent een paar scherpe haarspeldbochten.

28. Betancuria

Betancuria, de oude hoofdstad van het eiland wordt geroemd als één van de mooiste dorpjes van Spanje. Het ligt verscholen in een vruchtbare vallei en de route er naar toe kent enkele prachtige uitzichtpunten. Betancuria is het historisch hart van het eiland en de geplaveide straatjes en glanzende witte huizen van het oude centrum nemen je even mee terug in de tijd. Het dorpje is niet heel groot en trekt veel bezoekers. Om parkeerproblemen te voorkomen kun je het beste vroeg in de ochtend of laat in de middag gaan.

29. Playa del Viejo Reyes - walking trail

Vanuit La Pared kun je een leuke wandeling maken naar Playa del Viejo Reyes. Een ruig en onaangetast strand bestaande uit fijn donker zand en begrensd door hoge zwarte rotsen, een plaats van ongerepte schoonheid. Aan deze kant van het eiland is de zee ruiger en de stroming sterker. Hou ook rekening met de getijden. Bij hoogtij is het strand grotendeels overstroomd. Tijdens ons bezoek begon het net vloed te worden en moesten we uiteindelijk vertrekken. Er zijn mensen die dit in de gaten houden en ons tijdig waarschuwden. Niet onbelangrijk want het water kwam sneller terug dan we hadden verwacht. Helaas spreken we niet uit eigen ervaring maar de zonsondergang hier moet spectaculair zijn.

30. Playa las Hermosas

Een afgelegen strand van zwart vulkanisch zand temidden van een ruige ongetemde natuur. Weer en wind zijn hier genadeloos en hebben vele bijzondere rotsformaties doen ontstaan te ontdekken via diverse wandelpaden. De meest bekende formatie is de Crocodile Rock; een rots is de vorm van een krokodillenkop.

31. Las Playitas

Klein vissersdorpje met een promenade, restaurantjes en een mini-bieb op het strand.

27. Faro de Entallada

Beautiful still active light house located on a high cliff rising 196 above sea level and with an unrivalled view. On a clear day you can see about 21 nautical miles. The road up the lighthouse has a couple of sharp hairpin bends.

28. Betancuria

Betancuria, de former capital of the island is praised as one of the most beautiful villages of Spain. It lies hidden in a fertile valley and on your drive over there you will pas some amazing view points. Betancuria is the historical hart of the island and its paved streets and bright white buildings take you back in time. As the village it quite small and visited by lots of tourist is it recommended to go early in the morning or later afternoon. At the peak of the day it can be crowded and finding a parking spot can be hard.

29. Playa del Viejo Reyes - walking trail

From La Pared there is a nice walking trail to Playa del Viejo Reyes. A wild and prestine stretch of beach made of fine dark sand and bordered by imposing high black cliffs; a place of untouched beauty. At this side of the island the the sea is rough and there is a strong current. Also keep an eye on the tide tables. At high tide the beach is flooded and you cannot visit. We were there during upcoming tide and had to leave. There are guards keeping an eye as the tides often comes in quicker than expected. We cannot tell from experience but the sunsets here must be amazing.

30. Playa las Hermosas

A remote beach of black vulcanic sand, surrounded by a rugged wild landscape. There are various paths here to explore all kind of rock formations eroded by sea and wind. The most famous one is the Crocodile Rock, a formation resembling a crocodile's head.

31. Las Playitas

Small fishing village with a board walk, some nice restaurants and a tiny library on the beach.
