Fotoverslag korte reizen

Van de kortere reizen maken we een fotoverslag in plaats van een blog. Dit is een korte impressie van wat u zoal ter plaatse kunt doen aangevuld met wat praktische informatie. Aangezien we enkel de plaatsen beschrijven waar we zelfs geweest zijn is dit geen volledig overzicht van alle toeristische mogelijkheden. Onze fotoverslagen zijn 2-talig (Nederlands en Engels). Wij hopen dat onze fotoverslagen u zullen inspireren.

Photo report short trips

From short trips we will create a photo report instead of a blog. This is a short impression of interesting sights and activities. As we will only list the places where we have been ourselves this list will not be a complete overview of all touristic possibilities. Our photo reports are 2-lingual (Dutch and English). We hope our photo reports may inspire you.

Georgioupolis & Lake Kournas

1. Georgioupolis: Klein vissersdorpje met een leuk plein, wat winkels en gezellige terrasjes. Het dorp heeft een mooi strand. Vlakbij de haven is er de mogelijkheid een kano te huren om daarmee een stukje de "turtle river" op te varen. Als je geluk hebt zie je enkele zeeschildpadden. Ook zeker de moeite waard is een bezoek aan de Agios Nikolaos Chapel; een klein witte kapel aan het einde van een pier. Met droge voeten de overtocht halen is dé uitdaging.

2. Lake Kournas: Zoetwater meer. Het meer is ondiep en er staat geen stroming. Het is daarmee een geschikte zwemplek vooral voor kinderen. Voor een paar Euro per uur kun je er waterfietsen huren en proberen enkele van de schildpadden te spotten die in het meer wonen.

1. Georgioupolis: Small fishing village with a nice central square surrounded by restaurants and shops. The village has a nice beach. Nearby the harbour you can rent a canoe and visit the "turtle river". When you are lucky you might see some sea turtles.  Also worth visiting is the Agios Nikolaos Chapel; a small white chapel at the end of a walk way going into the sea. Not getting wet is the challenge here.  

2. Lake Kournas: Shallow fresh water lake that has no current.  It is a good place to swim especially for childeren. For a couple of Euro's per hour you can rent a water bike to cycle around the lake. Maybe you see some of the turles living here.

Rethymnon

3. Rethymnon: De oude stad van Rethymnon is een heerlijke wirwar van smalle straatjes met leuke winkels en gezellige terrasjes. Je vindt er ook een prachtig fort (Fortezza) en een Venetiaanse haven.

Tip: zoekt u een kleinschalig restaurantje met goede gerechten, probeer restaurant Hasika. Het menu is klein maar het eten top. Zeker een bezoekje waard.  

3. Rethymnon: The old town of Rethymnon is a lovely labyrinth of small streets with nice shops and great restaurants. There is also a nice old fort (Fortezza) and Venetian harbour.

Tip: are you looking for good food try restaurant Hasika. Their menu is small but the food really good. Definitely worth a visit.

Balos Beach

6. Balos Beach: Wonderlijk mooi strand in het uiterste noordwesten van het eiland. Ook de route er naar toe is is leuk. De laatste 7 kilometers zijn onverhard, maar met een normale auto goed te doen. Eenmaal ter plekke moet je nog een half uurtje berg af naar het strand lopen (op slippers prima te doen). Terug omhoog is de klim een stuk pittiger. Er gaan ook boottochten naar het strand maar dan mis je het prachtige uitzicht op de baai tijdens je wandeling naar beneden.

Tip: neem voldoende water mee; er is niet heel veel te koop. Zorg ook voor zonbescherming er is op het strand weinig schaduw  

6. Balos Beach: An amazingly beautiful beach at the north eastern tip of the island. Also the road leading here is a great drive. De last 7 kilometers are unpaved but no problem for a normal 2 wheel drive (rental) car. After parking your car you have to walk down hill for about half an hour to reach the beach (doable on flip flops). The climb back up is more strenuous. There are also boatrips going here but then you will miss the amazing view of the bay on your walk down.

Tip: Bring enough water as there is not much you can buy here. Also have some sunprotection as there is hardly and shade on the beach.  

Chora Sfakion & Loutro Bay

4. Chora Sfakion: Bekend bij wandelaars want dit is het dorp waar je naar toe wordt gebracht nadat je de Samaria kloof hebt gelopen. Een klein haventje en kleine witte huisjes. Chora Sfakion is een klein Grieks vissersdorpje zoals je je een vissersdorpje voorstelt.  Het dorp is goed bereikbaar via een mooie route door de White Mountains. Deze bergen zijn ook het leefgebied van lammergieren. Als je geluk hebt zie je ze cirkelen in de lucht. Het dorpje zelf is klein en gezellig met veel terrassen rondom een klein haventje. Een goed adres voor een pauze is Anopolis Bakery. Ze serveren er overheerlijk zelfgemaakte taarten (grote porties). Vanaf Chora Sfakion vertrekt ook de boot naar Loutro Bay.  

5. Loutro Bay: Klein idyllisch gelegen vissersdorpje gelegen in een omsloten baai dat alleen toegankelijk is via het water. Er gaat geen weg naar toe. Om hier te komen kun je een een bootje nemen vanaf Chora Sfakion (gaat enkele keren per dag). Loutro Bay is leuk al is van het oorspronkelijke visserleven niet veel over. Vandaag de dag is Loutro voornamelijk een verzameling restaurants en hotels. Een goede plek voor een overnachting weg van de drukte. We vonden het een leuk uitstapje, al was voor ons een bezoek van 2 uur voldoende. Onderweg stop de boot nog bij Sweetwater Beach. Hier kun je een tussenstop maken om lekker te zwemmen.

Chania & Seitan Limania Beach

7. Chania: De tweede stad van het eiland heeft een mooie oude binnenstad gelegen aan een schilderachtige Venetiaanse haven. Chania wordt ook wel de diamant van Kreta genoemd en niet zonder reden. Het is een heerlijke stad om in te dolen. Voor ons was Chania dé verrassing en we vonden het leuker dan Rethymnon.

Tip: In Chania vind je veel winkels met lederwaren; er is zelfs een echte "leerstraat". Zoek je een mooie leren jas, dan is het zeker aan te raden hier even rond te snuffelen.  

8. Seitan Limania Beach: Bijzonder stukje strand op het uiteinde van het Chania schiereiland. Om er te komen moet je vlak voordat je er bent een paar scherpe steile haarspeldbochten overwinnen. Het strand ligt onderaan de rotsen. Wij hebben het alleen van boven gezien. Hoewel het er aanlokkelijk uitzag durfden we het steile pad op onze slippers niet af te dalen.

Margarites & Arkadi Monastry

9. Margarites: Kneuterig pottenbakkersdorpje in de bergen. Er zijn veel winkeltjes waar aardewerk en andere souvenirs te koop zijn. Het is een leuk dorpje om even doorheen te wandelen.

10. Akradi Monastry: Mooi Venetiaans klooster in de bergen van Kreta. Een bezoek aan het klooster staat op het programma van veel uitstapjes en mede daardoor super toeristisch. Toch is het ondanks de vele bezoekers zeker de moeite waard.

Imbros Gorge

11. Imbroskloof: Een prachtige kloof om doorheen te wandelen. Korter en minder zwaar dan de Samaria kloof, maar zeker niet minder indrukwekkend. Vooral het middelste deel waar de kloof op zijn smalst is. De kloof is hier zo smal dat je wanneer je je armen strekt aan beide kanten de steile rotswand kunt aanraken. De lengte van de wandeling is 8 kilometer en duurt 2 tot 2,5 uur. Bij de ingang kun je gratis parkeren. Aan het einde van de kloof kun je een taxi nemen die je terug brengt naar de parkeerplaats bij de ingang.

Tip: Bij de uitgang van de kloof is een zaakje waar je heerlijke verse jus d'orange kunt krijgen. Bij dit restaurantje kun je ook je taxi regelen. De taxi hier is goedkoper dan beneden langs de weg. Ook is het best lastig om beneden langs de weg een taxi te vinden.

Plakias & Kourtaliotiko gorge

12. Plakias: Leuk badplaatsje aan de zuidkant van het eiland. Zeker als het weer het in het noorden wat laat afweten, dan is dit plaatsje een mooi alternatief. Aan de zuidkant van het eiland is het een stuk droger. De weg van Plakias naar Chora Sfakion is mooie route met prachtige vergezichten. Onderweg passeer je een klein kasteel.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

13. Kourtaliotiko kloof : Een van de routes vanuit Rethymnon naar Plakias gaat via Kourtaliotiko kloof. Een prachtig stukje weg langs hoge ruwe bergen en kleine verborgen kerkjes en kasteeltjes. Er loopt ook een wandeling door de kloof (hebben wij niet gedaan).

Preveli Beach

14. Preveli Beach: Prachtig palmenstrand aan de zuidkust van Kreta; ca. 10 km van Plakias. Door het palmenbos loopt een rivier die vanuit een kloof in zee uit mondt. Vanaf het strand kun je door het bos stroomopwaarts langs de rivier een stukje de kloof in lopen. De omgeving hier is erg mooi. Om vanaf de parkeerplaats bij het strand te komen moet je flink wat trappen afdalen. Op de heenweg niet zo erg maar terug omhoog toch een pittige klim. (op slippers te doen).  

Tip: Op het strand is een klein restaurantje met terras.  

4. Chora Sfakion: Known by hikers for this is the village where you are taken after you have walked the Samaria gorge. A small harbout and small white houses. Chora Sfakion is a small Greek fishing villiage as you imagine it. The village is accessible via een nice route through the White Mountans. These mountains are home to lammergeyer. If your are lucky you can see them circling in the sky. The village itself is small but cosy with lots of terraces around a small harbour. A good place for a break is Anopolis Bakery. They serve delicious home baked pies (big portions). From Chora Sfakion you can also take the ferry to Loutro Bay.

5. Loutro Bay: Small fishing village on an idyllic location in an enclosed bay that is only accessible by water.  There are no roads leading here. To get here you must take the ferry from Chora Sfakion (runs several times per day). Loutro Bay is nice although you will not see any of the former fishing life. Today Loutro is a small bay with mainly restaurants and hotels. A good place for a quiet stay away from the crowds. We really liked visiting it, but for us 2 hours was enough. On the way the ferry will stop at Sweetwater Beach. Here you can stop for a good swim.

7. Chania: The second city of the stad island has a beautiful old centre located at a picturesque Venetian harbour. Chania is also called the diamond of Crete and not without reason. It really is a wonderfull city to stroll around. For us Chania was a great surprise. We liked it more than Rethymnon.  

Tip: In Chania you will find many leather shops. Are you looking for a nice bag or leather jacket, then it is really worth looking around here.

8. Seitan Limania Beach: An unique little beach at the tip of the Chania peninsula. To get here you must conquer some sharp pretty hairpins. The small secluded beach is located at the bottom of a cliff.  We only viewed it from the top. Although the beach looked tempting we did not dare walking down the steep slope on our flip flops.

9. Margarites: Picturesque potters' village in the mountains. Small village with beautiful little houses and small shops. A nice place to stroll around.

10. Akradi Monastry: Beautiful Venetian monastry in the mountains of Crete. Due to the fact that a visit to the monastry is part of many island tours it is extremely touristic. Regardless the crowds it is worth a visit.

11. Imbros gorge: A beautiful gorge for a hike. Although shorter and less strenuous than the Samaria gorge it is definitely not less impressive. Especially the middle part where the gorge is at its smallest. At this point the gorge is so small that you are able to touch the steep wall on both sides when you stretch your arms. The total length of the walk is 8 kilometers and will take about 2 to 2,5 hours. Parking (free) is available at the entrance. At the end of the gorge you can catch a taxi that will bring you back to the entrance.

Tip: At the exit is a small bar that serves delicious fresh orange juice. Here at this bar you can also arrange your taxi. The taxi here is cheaper than further down near the main road. Finding a taxi from the main road is also more difficult.  

12. Plakias: Nice beach resort on the south side of the island. Especially when the weather in the is bad, this place can be a good alternative. The south side of the island has a different climate. Here it is much drier. The route between Plakias and Chora Sfakion is a nice scenic drive with some amazing views and a castle on the way.

13. Kourtaliotiko Gorge : One of the routes from Rethymnon to Plakias passes the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. A beautiful stretch of road runs through high rough mountains with some small castles and churches. You can also hike the gorge (we did not do this).

14. Preveli Beach: Gorgeous palm beach at the south coast of Crete about 10 kilometers of Plakias. Through the palm runs a river that ends in the sea. From the beach you can walk through the forest and follow the river upstream into the gorge. The scenery here is very beautiful. To get to the beach from the parking you must walk down a hill with many stairs. Going down is easy but going up is pretty streneous (doable on flip flops).

Tip: At the beach is a small bar and terrace.
