3. Ermita de San Juan Gaztelugatxe
Fans of Game of Thrones might recognize it. The little church is built on a small rock island that is connected to the mainland by a medieval stone bridge. The only way to get there is on foot. Although the walk is relatively short, it is very strenuous. From the higher located entrance you have to walk down a steep path, then a short walk over a gorgeous medieval stone bridge and finally climbing a stone stairway with 241 steps. The benches next to the church are no unnecessary luxury. It takes a few minutes before we can enjoy the fabulous views. But the walk so far was just a good rehearsal. The last steep part back to the entrance made the walk back way more harder. Or maybe it was just because of our poor condition. We were happy that the weather was not too warm. We would not like doing this walk in mid summer. Tired but exited about the accomplishment we walk back to the car. Tomorrow we will be having muscle pain. We visited the church for free. However, because they want to restrict the number of visitors, depending on the season, you might need to book a ticket.

Hondarribia is het eerste dorpje net over de grens met Frankrijk. Het dorpje staat bekend om zijn kleurrijke Baskische huizen met typische balkons. De meeste bevinden zich in het historische centrum dat gelegen is in het hogere gedeelte van het dorp. In het lagere deel vind je de visserswijk. Hier vind je ook de haven en een mooie boulevard met goede restaurants. We zijn hier gestopt voor de lunch en een kleine wandeling.
Onze eerste nacht verbleven we op Camping Zerauts. Het is gelegen op een heuvel met een geweldig uitzicht op de kust. Om het dichtsbijzijnde strand te bereiken moet je een behoorlijk lange en steile trap bedwingen. Camping Zerauts is een grote camping die veel bezocht wordt door surfers.

1. Hondarribia
2. Camping Zerauts
Hondarribia is the first village just across the border with France. The village is known for its colorful Basque houses with balconies. Most can be found in the historical area which is in the upper part of the village. In the lower part you can find the Fisherman's area with a harbour and a nice boulevard with good restaurants. We stopped here for lunch and had a nice stroll.
Our first night in Spain we stayed at Camping Zerauts. Located on top of a hill with an amazing view on the coast. To get down to the nearest beach you have to climb steep stairs. Camping Zerauts is a big campsite that attracts lots of surfers.
3. Ermita de San Juan Gaztelugatxe
Liefhebbers van de Game of Thrones zullen het misschien herkennen. Het kerkje is gelegen op een klein rotseilandje dat door middel van een stenen loopbrug is verbonden met het vaste land. De enige manier om het eiland te bereiken is te voet. Hoewel de wandeling relatief kort is, is het een een flinke inspanning. Vanaf de hoger gelegen ingang is het eerst een steil pad bergafwaarts, dan een korte wandeling over een prachtige Middeleeuwse stenen brug en tot slot een stenen trap met 241 treden. De bankjes boven bij het kerkje zijn geen overbodige luxe. Het kost ons een paar minuten voordat we van het fabuleuze uitzicht kunnen genieten. Maar de heenreis was slechts een goede repetitie. Het steile pad terug naar de ingang was het zwaarst en maakte de wandeling terug een stuk pittiger. Of misschien was het ook wel onze beroerde conditie. We waren in iedere geval blij dat het niet zo warm was. We zouden de wandeling niet graag in de warmste maanden doen. Moe maar voldaan strompelen we terug naar de auto. Morgen spierpijn dat is zeker. Wij hebben het kerkje gratis kunnen bezoeken. Echter omdat men het aantal bezoekers wil beperken moet je, afhankelijk van het seizoen, mogelijk een ticket boeken.

Playa del Regaton ligt vlak bij zee maar is eingelijk gelegen aan de monding van de rivier Ria de Treto. Het strand kent een sterke getijde en valt bij eb grotendeels droog. Wij sliepen op het nabij gelegen en gelijknamige camping. Een goede plek met veel schaduw. Bij de camping kun je fietsen huren om Laredo te bezoeken.
Laredo, het nabij gelegen stadje, heeft een klein historisch centrum. Een van de meest iconische plekken is Tunel de la Atalaya, een lange voetgangerstunnel die vanuit centrum naar de kust loopt waar een ingang in de rotsen ooit de enige verbinding met de haven was. In oorlogstijd was de tunnel ook een veel gebruikte schuilplaats.

Playa del Regaton, altough close to sea, the beach is actually located at the mouth of the river Ria de Treto. The beach has a strong tide and is mostly dry at low tide. We stayed on the nearby campsite that has the same name. A good place with lots of shade. The campsite also rents bikes, which are great for visiting nearby Laredo.
Laredo, the nearby town, has a small historic center. One of the most iconic places is Tunel de la Atalaya. A long pedestrian tunnel that runs from the city to the coast where an entrance in the rock wall was once the only connection to the harbour. During the war it was also a hiding place.

Pittoreske bergdorpje met nauwe straatjes, steegjes, een rivier die door het dorp konkelt, oude stenen muren en bruggen en een keur aan goede restaurants. Het is goede uitvalsbasis voor een bezoek aan Picos de Europa, de kabelbaan of een wandeling door de Hermida-kloof. Maar ook als je net als wij er alleen doorheen wilt rijden is het ook zeker de moeite waard.
Camping La Viorna, gelegen vlakbij Potes en een geweldig uitzicht op het dal en de omringde bergen. De camping heeft een zwembad en goed restaurant.

Picturesque mountain village with narrow streets, a small river running straight through the village, old stone walls and stone bridges and lots of good restaurants. It is a good starting point for visiting Picos de Europa, the cable care or hiking the Hermida gorge. But also if you, just like us, just want to cross the Picos by car it is a great stopover.
Camping La Viorna, located a few kilometers outside of Potes and with amazing views of the valley and surrounding mountains peaks. The camping also has a swimming pool and good restaurant.
8. Riano / Picos de Europa
Picos de Europa is één van de mooiste bergketens van Europa. Hoge pieken, groene dalen en slaperige authentieke bergdorpjes en heldere stuwmeren. We komen hier zeker nog eens terug. Voor deze reis echter was het slechts een doorreis bestemming. Het was een prachtige route met geweldige vergezichten. Een mooie tussenstop is Riano. Aanrader voor een kopje koffie met overheerlijke huisgemaakte cake/taart is Hotel La Presa.
8. Riano / Picos de Europa
Picos de Europa is one of the most beautiful mountain ranges of Europe. High peaks, green valleys, sleepy authentic mountain villages and clear resevoir lakes. We will definitely come back here one day. For this trip it was just a transit destination. The drive was very scenic with amazing views. A nice place for stopover is Riano. At Hotel La Presa they serve coffee with very nice home baked cake.
12. Braganca / Camping Capo Verde
Het vestingstadje Braganca in het noordoosten van Portugal is onze eerste Portugese stop. Het is gelegen aan de rand van Montesinho NP. De route er naar toe is prachting. Het landschap is heuvelachtig met mooie vergezichten. Overnachten doen we op camping Capo Verde, gelegen net voorbij het stadje en omringd door een woud van tamme kastanjes. Vanuit de camping zijn er leuke activiteiten naar het Nationaal Park. De camping heeft ook een goed restaurant.
12. Braganca / Camping Capo Verde
The fortified town of Braganca in northeastern Portugal is our first Portuguese stop. It's located on the edge of Montesinho National Park. The route there is beautiful. The landscape is hilly with stunning views. We'll spend the night at Camping Capo Verde, just past the town and surrounded by a forest of sweet chestnut trees. From the campsite, there are fun activities to do in the National Park. The campsite also has a good restaurant.
16. Bom Jesus do Monte
Katholiek heiligdom gebouwd op de helling van de berg Espinho met uitzicht op de stad Braga. Het bijzondere heiligdom dat omgeven is door een prachtige tuin bevat een witte kerk en meerdere kapellen. Het meest indrukwekkend is de beroemde Trap der Vijf Zintuigen. Het zijn 17 terrassen, verbonden met trappen en elk versierd met beelden en symbolische fonteinen. Wie geen zin heeft alle trappen te beklimmen kan ook de kabelbaan nemen. Je kunt er ook met de auto naar toe rijden. Bovenaan zijn een beperkt aantal parkeerplaatsen.
16. Bom Jesus do Monte
A Catholic shrine built on the slopes of Mount Espinho overlooking the city of Braga. This unique shrine, surrounded by a beautiful garden, features a white church and several chapels. The most impressive feature is the famous Staircase of the Five Senses. It comprises 17 terraces, connected by steps, each decorated with statues and symbolic fountains. Those who don't feel like climbing all the steps can take the cable car. You can also drive there. Limited parking is available at the top.

Mooi kasteel gelegen aan de rand van de stad. Van buiten is het een imposant bouwwerk. Van binnen echter valt het tegen en vonden we het de entree van 5 euro niet waard.

A beautiful castle situated on the edge of the city. From the outside, it's an imposing structure. However, the interior is disappointing, and we didn't think it was worth the 5-euro entrance fee.
18. Guimaraes
Guimaraes was ooit de eerste hoofdstad van het Portugal. Het stadje heeft een mooi historisch centrum met sfeervolle pleinen, smalle middeleeuwse straatjes en karakteristieke houten huizen met kleinen balkonnetjes.

Guimaraes was once the first capital of Portugal. The city has a beautiful historic center with charming squares, narrow medieval streets, and characteristic wooden houses with small balconies.
19. Porto
Porto is na Lissabon de grootste stad van het land en de stad waar de bekende Port wijnen hun naam aan te danken hebben. Voor een bezoek van slechts één dag of een meerdaagse ciytrip, Porto is meer dan de moeite waard. Het is een prachtige stad met veel bezienswaardigheden en een keur aan goede restaurants.
Trek wel goede wandelschoenen aan. Je zult heel wat kilometers lopen en houd er rekening mee dat de stad heel veel hoogteverschillen kent. Wij begonnen altijd in het hogere en liepen dan naar beneden richting de rivier.
Ook Uber taxis rijden er veelvuldig en zijn niet duur.
Highlights die wij hebben bezocht:
- Dom Luis I brug. De beroemde en meest iconische brug van de stad. Het is leuk van via de brug van de ene kant naar de andere kant van de stad te wandelen.
- Torre dos Clérigos, in de directe omgeving vind je diverse mooie straatjes en bouwwerken. Er is ook een tramhalte
- Kathedraal van Porto met haar prachtig interieur
- Sao Bento treinstation, prachtig gedecoreerde vertrekhal
- Livraria Lello, één van de mooiste bibliotheken ter wereld en de plek waar JK Rowling, bekend van de Harry Potter boeken, zich liet inspireren. Kaartjes moeten vooraf worden geboekt en houdt rekening met lange wachttijden.
- Vila Nova de Gaia, een van Porto's bekendste wijken en beroemd om haar kleurrijke pakhuizen
- McDonalds, gevestigd is een statig historisch gebouw met kristallen kroonluchters, glas-in-loodramen en sierlijke plafonds wordt het geroemd als één van de mooiste McDonalds ter wereld.
- Tram lijn 1, een ritje met een iconische tram is zeker een aanrader
- Foz, een leuke bestemming om met lijn 1 naar toe te reizen is de buitenwijk Foz. Het is gelegen langs zowel de zee als de oever van de rivier. Je kunt er heerlijk wandelen langs de promenade, even wat drinken in een strandbar, of een bezoek brengen aan de vuurturen of de Pergola da Foz.
- Azulejo, verspreid over de stad vind je gebouwen waarvan de gevels versierd zijn met prachtige blauwe tegeltjes (azulejo's). Capela das Almas is een van de mooiere.
- Rua Santa Catarina, voor wie wil winkelen is dit de place to be. De brede winkelstraat is autovrij. Je vindt er ook Cafe Majestic, een van de bekendste cafe's van de stad en een prima plek voor een pauze.
- Mercado do Bolhao - Overdekte markthal. Je vindt er etenswaren zoals groente en fruit, vlees, kaas, sardines maar ook sierraden en snuisterijen.
- Norte shopping mall - Een mega grote mall met winkels van alle bekende ketens als ook dure designer merken.
- Mercado Beira-Rio - tegenover de kabelbaan vind je een kleine foodhal waar je voor scherpe prijzen heerlijk kunt eten.
19. Porto
Porto is the second largest city in the country after Lisbon and the city that gave its name to the famous Port wines. Whether you're looking for a one-day visit or a multi-day city break, Porto is well worth it. It's a beautiful city with many sights and a wide variety of excellent restaurants. You'll be walking quite a few kilometers, and keep in mind that the city has many elevation changes. We always started at the higher elevations and then walked down towards the river. Also Uber taxis are widely available and not expensive.
Highlights we visited:
- Dom Luis I Bridge. The famous and most iconic bridge of the city. It's fun to walk from one side of the city to the other via the bridge.
- Torre dos Clérigos, nearby are many nice streeds and buildings. There is also a tram stop here.
- Porto Cathedral with its magnificent interior
- Sao Bento train station, beautifully decorated departure hall
- Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful libraries in the world and the place where J.K. Rowling, known for her Harry Potter books, found inspiration. Tickets must be booked in advance, and expect long wait times.
- Vila Nova de Gaia, one of Porto's most famous neighborhoods and famous for its colorful warehouses
- McDonald's, housed in a stately historic building with crystal chandeliers, stained-glass windows, and ornate ceilings, it's considered one of the most beautiful McDonald's restaurants in the world.
- Tram line 1, a ride on this iconic tram is highly recommended
- Foz, a fun destination to travel to on line 1 is the suburb of Foz. It's situated along both the sea and the riverbank. You can enjoy a lovely stroll along the promenade, have a drink at a beach bar, or visit the lighthouses or the Pergola da Foz.
- Azulejo, scattered throughout the city are buildings with facades decorated with beautiful blue tiles (azulejos). Capela das Almas is one of the most beautiful.
- Rua Santa Catarina, this is the place to be for shopping. This wide shopping street is pedestrianized. You'll also find Cafe Majestic, one of the city's most famous cafes and a great place for a break.
- Mercado do Bolhao - Indoor market. You'll find food products such as fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, sardines, as well as jewelry and trinkets.
- Norte shopping mall - A huge mall with stores from all the well-known chains as well as expensive designer brands.
- Mercado Beira-Rio - Opposite the cable car, you'll find a small food hall where you can enjoy delicious food at competitive prices.
21. Capela do Senhor da Pedra
De mooiste stranden van Porto vind je ten zuiden van de stad. Op het strand van Miramar vlakbij de branding vind je Capela do Senhor da Pedra. Een fotogeniek Kapelletje gebouwd temidden van enkele grote granieten rotsen. Aan de zuidkant van de stad vind je ook de meeste campsites. Wij verbleven op Parque de Campismo de Salgueiros. Voor minder dan 10 euro heb je een Uber die je van de camping naar de stad brengt. Ook ligt de camping niet ver van het strand.
22. Igreja Matriz de Santa Marinha de Cortagaca
Prachtige kerk volledig bedekt met blauwe tegeltjes (azulejos). De kerk staat in een klein dorpje ten zuiden van Porto.
21. Capela do Senhor da Pedra
Porto's most beautiful beaches are located south of the city. On Miramar beach, near the surf, you'll find the Capela do Senhor da Pedra, a photogenic chapel built amidst several large granite boulders. Most of the campsites are also located on the south side of the city. We stayed at Parque de Campismo de Salgueiros. For less than 10 euros, you can take an Uber from the campsite to the city. The campsite is also not far from the beach.
23. Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Valega
In Valega, zo'n 40 kilometer ten zuiden van Porto, staat veruit de meest kleurrijke kerk die we ooit hebben gezien. Net als zoveel bijzondere gebouwen in Portugal is ook deze kerk volledige bedekt met Portugese tegeltjes. De meeste muren in de traditionele blauwe kleuren echter de voorgevel daarentegen is een explosie van kleur die allerlei religieuze afbeeldingen vormen. Ook binnenin is de kerk bijzonder kleurrijk, maar dat hebben we met eigen ogen helaas niet kunnen zien. Tijdens ons bezoek was de kerk gesloten (zondagochtend).

Beautiful church completely covered with blue tiles (azulejos). The church is located in a small village south of Porto.
23. Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Valega
In Valega, about 40 kilometers south of Porto, we visited by far the most colorful church we've ever seen. Like so many remarkable buildings in Portugal, this one is completely covered in Portuguese tiles. Most of the walls are in the traditional blue, but the facade, in contrast, is an explosion of color that forms all sorts of religious images. The interior is also remarkably colorful, but unfortunately, we couldn't see it firsthand. It was closed during our visit (Sunday morning).
24. Aveiro
De oude havenstad, Aveiro wordt ook wel het Venetie van Portugal genoemd. Hoewel het zonder meer een leuke stop is voor een paar uurtjes gaat de vergelijking met Venetie wat ons betreft totaal niet op. Los van een klein historische centrum en enkele prachtige gebouwen is er verder niet heel veel te zien. Het boottochtje dat slechts twee kanaaltjes op en neer vaart is een teleurstelling.
24. Aveiro
The old port city of Aveiro is also known as the Venice of Portugal. While it's certainly a pleasant stop for a few hours, in our opinion, the comparison with Venice is completely inaccurate. Aside from a small historic center and some beautiful buildings, there's not much else to see. The boat trip, which only goes up and down two canals, is a disappointment.
25. Costa Nova
Vlakbij Aveiro, op een smalle zandstrook dat ligt ingeklemd tussen de zee en de Ria de Aveiro bevindt zich het dorpje Costa Nova. Een badplaats dat bekend staat om haar gestreepte huizen in felle kleuren afgewisseld met wit. De huisjes werden vroeger gebruikt door de vissers als schuilplek bij slecht weer en voor de opslag van hun visgerei. Vandaag de dag doen de meeste dienst als vakantiehuis. Langs de promenade zijn een aantal zaakjes waar je goede koffie kunt drinken of een ijsco kunt eten. Iets ten zuiden van Costa Nova, bij het waterpark Vega Splash vind je een camperplek waar je voor een prikje kunt overnachten. Het is er meestal erg druk (je staat er letterlijk camper aan camper) maar de ligging net achter de duinen is geweldig en de zonsondergang over de oceaan fenomenaal.
25. Costa Nova
Near Aveiro, on a narrow strip of sand nestled between the sea and the Ria de Aveiro, lies the village of Costa Nova. This seaside resort is known for its brightly colored, striped houses interspersed with white. These houses were once used by fishermen as shelter from bad weather and for storing their fishing gear. Today, most serve as holiday homes. Along the promenade are some nice places to have a coffee or some ice cream. Just south of Costa Nova, near Vega Splash water park, you'll find a campervan site where you can stay overnight for a small fee. It's usually very busy (you're literally parked campervan next to campervan), but the location just behind the dunes is fantastic, and the sunsets over the ocean are phenomenal.
26. Agueda
Een kleurrijk plaatsje dat veel kunstenaars trekt en dat komt onder andere door het Agit Agueda festival dat hier ieder zomer plaats vindt. Tijdens dit festival komen de straatjes van het oude centrum tot leven onder een overkapping van felgekleurde paraplu's. Hoewel in oktober, tijdens ons bezoek, dit festival allang was afgelopen waren er nog steeds enkele straatjes versierd met paraplu's.
26. Agueda
A colorful town that attracts many artists, thanks in part to the Agit Agueda festival that takes place here every summer. During this festival, the streets of the old town come alive under a canopy of brightly colored umbrellas. Although the festival had long since ended when we visited in October, some streets were still decorated with umbrellas.
29. Serra da Estrela NP
Het is de grootste bergketen van Portugal en tevens een nationaal park. Het is een wereld van bergmeren, granieten rotsen en groene valleien. Dwars door dit bijzondere gebied loopt de Estrada Regional 338, één van de mooiste routes van het land. Komend vanuit het westen (via Sao Romao) rijden we bijna een uur door een dikke laaghangende bewolking waarbij we nauwelijks een paar meter zicht hebben. Even overwegen we zelfs terug te rijden, maar dan vlak voor de top zijn we erdoor heen. Terwijl de wolken als een wollige deken de wereld onder ons bedekt ontvouwt zich voor ons een ruige hoogvlakte. Bij Torre, het hoogste punt op 1993 meter, maken we een korte tussentop. Er zijn hier enkele winkeltjes die vooral kaas, vlees en wolprodukten verkopen. We verlaten het nationaal park aan de oostkant (via Covilha). Aan deze kant is de weg het steilst en bevinden zich de meeste soms zeer scherpe haarspeldbochten. Heb je een hele zware camper, dan is het misschien fijner de route in omgekeerde richting te rijden. De rijdt dan het steilste deel bergopwaarts.
31. Monsanto
Ook dit dorpje ligt op een berg en is te bereiken via opnieuw een smal steil weggetje. Het dorpje is autovrij. Op de gok rijden we door tot vlak voor de ingang van het dorp. We hebben mazzel. Er is nog net één parkeerplaats vrij. In het hoogseizoen zal parkeren ongetwijfeld en stuk lastiger zijn. In het kleine dorpje lijkt de tijd te hebben stilgestaan. Op de top van de berg bevindt zich een kasteel dat ooit gebouwd is door de tempeliers. Het meest indrukwekkend echter is de architectuur die zich naadloos heeft aangepast aan de omgeving die bezaaid ligt met enorme granieten rotsen. Zo op het oog een onmogelijk plek om te bouwen, maar de grondleggers van het dorp hebben zich daardoor niet laten ontmoedigen. Integendeel. Ze hebben de rotsen omarmd en deel gemaakt van hun huizen. Soms als dak soms als muur of anderszins. De huizen en de rotsen vormen één geheel. Het is een bijzonder dorp dat een bezoek meer dan waard is maar als je slecht ter been bent misschien niet de beste keuze. De straatjes zijn behoorlijk steil. Zeker de straatjes met de meest bijzondere huizen hogerop in het dorp.
31. Monsanto
This village, too, is perched on a mountain and is reached via another narrow, steep road. The village is car-free. We take our chance and drive right up to the village entrance. We're lucky. There's just one parking space left. Parking will undoubtedly be much more difficult during peak season. Time seems to have stood still in the small village. At the top of the mountain stands a castle, once built by the Knights Templar. Most impressive, however, is the architecture, which has seamlessly blended into the surroundings, dotted with enormous granite rocks. At first glance, it seems an impossible place to build, but the village's founders weren't discouraged. On the contrary. They embraced the rocks and made them part of their homes, sometimes as a roof, sometimes as a wall, or otherwise. The houses and the rocks form a single entity. It's a unique village well worth a visit, but perhaps not the best choice if you have difficulty walking. The streets are quite steep, especially the streets with the most unique houses higher up in the village.

33. Nazaré
Nazaré is gezellig kustplaatsje met een groot strand en een leuke boulevard met tal van winkeltjes en restaurants. De grootste trekpleister echter zijn de hoge golven. Nazaré geniet inmiddels wereldwijde bekendheid om de grootste golven ter wereld die breken voor de vuurtoren van het dorp. De grootste golf ooit gesurft in Nazaré is maar liefst 25 meter hoog. Dit bijzondere spektakel trekt surfers van over de hele wereld. Tijdens ons bezoek echter was de zee glad en de golven slecht rimpeltjes. Ook een bezoekje waard is de kleine expositie van diverse vissersboten. Je vindt deze op het strand ongeveer halverwege de baai. Niet ver daarvandaan, eveneens op het strand vind je een bijzondere visdrogerij. Op een serie grote rekken liggen hier allerlei vissen en inktvissen te drogen. De vis wordt verkocht door oude vrouwen, sommigen in traditionale kleding.
33. Nazaré
Nazaré is a charming coastal town with a large beach and a pleasant boulevard lined with shops and restaurants. However, the biggest draw is the high waves. Nazaré has become world-renowned for the world's largest waves that break in front of the village lighthouse. The largest wave ever surfed in Nazaré is an impressive 25 meters high. This remarkable spectacle attracts surfers from all over the world. However, during our visit, the sea was smooth and the waves only rippled. Also worth a visit is the small exhibition of various fishing boats. You'll find it on the beach about halfway around the bay. Not far from there, also on the beach, you'll find a unique fish drying business. Various fish and squid are dried on a series of large racks. The fish is sold by old women, some in traditional dress.
37. Sintra
In de heuvels zo'n 30 kilometer van Lissabon ligt Sintra. Een charmant stadje dat ooit de buitenverblijven huisde van de Portugese adel en het koningshuis. Koningen en miljonairs troefden elkaar af met het bouwen van weelderige paleizen, extravagante villas en historische kastelen. Verscholen in een weelderige groene vegetatie vindt je de meest bijzondere gebouwen. Vandaag de dag is het een Unesco site en kunnen de mooiste paleizen en gebouwen worden bezocht. Je kunt hiervoor het beste vooraf kaartjes boeken en daar een dag voor uittrekken. De meeste gebouwen liggen ter ver uit elkaar om lopend te bezoeken. Er rijden daarom veel bussen en taxi's maar houd rekening met grote drukte en lange wachttijden. Wil je alle paleizen en kastelen bezoeken dan heb je niet alleen een groot budget nodig maar ook meerdere dagen. Wij hebben twee paleizen bezocht. Kom je met een camper dan kun je het beste parkeren bij het busstation. Zelf met de auto door Sintra rijden is niet aan te raden vanwege de extreme drukte. Je kunt bijna nergens parkeren en staat voortdurend in de file.
37. Sintra
In the hills about 30 kilometers from Lisbon lies Sintra. A charming town that once housed the country residences of the Portuguese nobility and royal family. Kings and millionaires competed with each other, building opulent palaces, extravagant villas, and historic castles. Hidden in lush green vegetation, you'll find the most extraordinary buildings. Today, it's a UNESCO site, and the most beautiful palaces and buildings can be visited. It's best to book tickets in advance and allow a day for this. Most buildings are too far apart to visit on foot. Therefore, there are many buses and taxis, but be prepared for large crowds and long wait times. If you want to visit all the palaces and castles, you'll need not only a large budget but also several days. We visited two palaces. If you're traveling with a campervan, it's best to park at the bus station. Driving through Sintra yourself is not recommended due to the extremely busy nature. Parking is almost impossible and you'll be stuck in constant traffic.
38. Sintra - Quinta da Ragaleira
Het eerste kasteel dat we hebben bezocht was Quinta de Ragaleira. Een landgoed gehuld in mystiek. Quinta da Ragaleira, ooit gebouwd door een Portugees-Braziliaanse miljonair, is het middelpunt van een wereld vol esoterische symboliek. De betoverende tuinen verbergen geheime doorgangen, grotten, ondergrondse tunnels, fonteinen, paleizen en de legendarische inwijdingsput. Een omgekeerde toren met een 27 meter lange wenteltrap die diep de aarde in reikt. Het hele landgoed vormt een complexe puzzel van alchemistische, vrijmetselaars- en Tempeliersverwijzingen waaronder het alziend oog en the 8-puntige ster. De wenteltrap zelf, die bestaat uit 9 etages van ieder 15 treden, is een verwijzing naar de 9 cirkels van de hel in Dante's Inferno die ieder symbool staan voor een zonde en de weg symbolisen door het vagevuur naar het paradijs. De inwijdingsput is één van de grootste trekpleisters en verwacht daarom lange rijen voor de ingang. Het is aan te raden vroeg te gaan.
38. Sintra - Quinta da Ragaleira
The first castle we visited was Quinta da Ragaleira, an estate shrouded in mystery. Quinta da Ragaleira, once built by a Portuguese-Brazilian millionaire, is the center of a world of esoteric symbolism. The enchanting gardens conceal secret passages, caves, underground tunnels, fountains, palaces, and the legendary initiation well. An inverted tower with a 27-meter-long spiral staircase that reaches deep into the earth. The entire estate forms a complex puzzle of alchemical, Masonic, and Templar references, including the all-seeing eye and the eight-pointed star. The spiral staircase itself, consisting of nine levels of 15 steps each, is a reference to the nine circles of hell in Dante's Inferno, each symbolizing a sin and the path through purgatory to paradise. The initiation well is one of the biggest attractions, and expect long lines at the entrance. It is advisable to go early.
39. Sintra - Pena Palace
Pena Palace, het voormalig zomerpaleis van de koninklijke famile, is het kroonjuweel van Sintra. Het kleurrijke paleis, dat niet zou misstaan in een Disnelyland park, schittert op de heuveltop en is vanuit diverse richtingen van veraf te zien. Het sprookjesachtige paleis is een merkwaardige uiting van 19e-eeuwse romantiek. Het felgekleurde gebouw is een combinatie van gotische torens, Moorse boven en Manuelijnse details. Pena Palace is veruit het meest bezochte paleis en verwacht daarom lange rijen zowel bij de bus naar de bergtop als bij de hoofdingang. Wij waren er rond de middag en hebben ongeveer uurtje moeten wachten. Vanaf de bushalte is het bovendien nog een steile wandeling naar heuveltop Omdat we geen zin hadden om eenmaal boven weer in de rij te staan om ook de binnekant te mogen bekijken hadden we alleen kaartjes gekocht voor de buitenkant. Je kunt daarmee, met uitzondering van de binnenkant van Pena Palace, alles op het erfgoed bekijken en staat dan niet meer op tijd.
39. Sintra - Pena Palace
Pena Palace, the former summer palace of the royal family, is Sintra's crown jewel. This colorful palace, which wouldn't look out of place in a Disneyland park, dazzles on the hilltop and can be seen from afar from various directions. The fairytale-like palace is a remarkable expression of 19th-century Romanticism. The brightly colored building combines Gothic towers, Moorish spires, and Manueline details. Pena Palace is by far the most visited palace, so expect long lines for both the bus to the hilltop and at the main entrance. We arrived around noon and had to wait about an hour. From the bus stop, it's also a steep walk to the top. Because we didn't want to queue again once we reached the top to see the interior, we only bought tickets for the exterior. With these tickets, you can see everything within the heritage site, except for the interior of Pena Palace, and you won't be restricted to time schedules anymore.
41. Lissabon
Lissabon is de hoofdstad van Portugal en een fantastische stad om te bezoeken. De stad heeft prachtige gebouwen, pittoreske straatjes, een enorm aanbod aan restaurants en een aantal geweldige uitzichtpunten.
De plaatsen die we bezochten zijn:
- Santa Justa lift, deze lift verbindt de wijk Baixa met het hogere Largo do Como
- Gele tram, maak een ritje in een van de iconische trams
- Miradouro de Santa Lucia; prachtig uitzichtpunt over de stad. Bijzonder is het plein met de kleurrijk bloeiende bomen en de pergola bedekt met blauwe tegeltjes.
- Praca do Comércio, groot plein en mooie triomfboog. Hier vind je ook de letters "Lisboa"
- LX factory, oud fabrieksterrein dat is omgetoverd tot een ministad voor creatievelingen. Zodra je binnenloopt zie je overal street art, gezellige cafe's en winkeltjes waar mensen hun, vaak zelf ontworpen spullen verkopen.
- Time out Market, grote overdekte foodhall. Er zijn wel 40 verschillende eetkraampjes.
- Pink street, de roze geverfde straat is in de late uurtjes het hart van het nachtleven.
Ook in Belem, een voorstadje van Lissabon hebben we een aantal leuke plekken bezocht:
- Torre de Belem, oude verdegingstoren in het water. prachtig gebouw om te doen. Eerste zondag van de maand is de entree gratis.
- Taag, maak een wandeling langs de kade van de rivier
- Padrao dos Descobrimentos, monument ter ere van de Portugese ontdekkingsreizigers. Het bouwwerk is 52 meter hoog en heeft de vorm van een schip met gebolde zeilen. Op het plein ervoor vind je een straatmozaïek van een wereldkaart met daarop ingetekend de ontdekkingsreizen.
We hebben overnacht op Camping Lisboa. Vanaf hier kun je eenvoudig met de bus of taxi (Uber) naar het centrum.
41. Lissabon
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and a fantastic city to visit. The city boasts beautiful buildings, picturesque streets, a huge selection of restaurants, and some amazing viewpoints.
The places we visited were:
- Santa Justa Lift, which connects the Baixa district with the upper Largo do Como.
- Yellow Tram, take a ride on one of the iconic trams.
- Miradouro de Santa Lucia, a magnificent viewpoint over the city. The square is particularly noteworthy, with its colorful flowering trees and pergola covered in blue tiles.
- Praca do Comércio, a large square and a beautiful triumphal arch. Here you'll also find the letters "Lisboa."
- LX Factory, a former factory site transformed into a mini-city for creatives. As soon as you walk in, you'll see street art, cozy cafes, and shops everywhere where people sell their, often self-designed, items.
- Time Out Market, a large indoor food hall. There are 40 different food stalls.
- Pink Street, the pink-painted street is the heart of the nightlife late into the night.
We also visited several nice places in Belem, a suburb of Lisbon:
- Torre de Belem, an old defense tower in the water. A beautiful building to explore. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month.
- Tagus River: take a stroll along the riverbank.
- Padrao dos Descobrimentos, a monument honoring the Portuguese explorers. The structure is 52 meters high and is shaped like a ship with billowing sails. In the square in front, you'll find a street mosaic of a world map with the voyages of discovery depicted on it.
We stayed overnight at Camping Lisboa. From here, you can easily reach the city center by bus or taxi (Uber).
43. Sagres
Klein plaatsje vlakbij Kaap Sint-Vincent; het meest zuidwestlijke punt van het Europese vaste land. Overnachten deden we op Salena eco camp. Een hele grote maar zeer mooie camping.

45. Lagos
Wij vonden het één van de leukste stadjes langs de Algarve. Er is een sfeervol oud centrum met lots of shops and restaurants. Een interessante plek is het plein waar zich vroeger de slavenmarkt bevond. Een monument is het enige wat nog aan deze periode herinnert. Vlakbij het beroemde "groene huis" (een gebouw volledig bedekt met groene azulejos) vind je restaurant Royal Indian Cuisine waar je heerlijk Indiaas kunt eten.
45. Lagos
We found it to be one of the nicest towns along the Algarve. It has a charming old town center with plenty of shops and restaurants. A particularly interesting spot is the square where the slave market used to be. A monument is the only remaining reminder of this period. Near the famous "green house" (a building completely covered in green azulejos), you'll find the Royal Indian Cuisine restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious Indian food.
29. Serra da Estrela NP
It's Portugal's largest mountain range and also a national park. It's a world of mountain lakes, granite cliffs, and green valleys. The Estrada Regional 338, one of the country's most beautiful routes, runs right through this unique area. Coming from the west (via São Romao), we drive for almost an hour through thick, low-hanging clouds, with barely a few meters of visibility. We even briefly considered turning back, but just before the summit, we broke through. While the clouds covered the world below like a woolly blanket, a rugged plateau unfolds before us. At Torre, the highest point at 1,993 meters, we make a short stopover. There are a few shops here, mainly selling cheese, meat, and wool products. We leave the national park on the east side (via Covilha). On this side, the road is steepest and has the most, sometimes very sharp, hairpin bends. If you have a very heavy, camper it might be better to drive the route in the opposite direction. You will drive the steepest parts uphil which in general is more safe.
46. Ponta da Piedade
Op het zuidelijkste puntje van de langtong niet ver van Lagos ligt Ponta da Piedade; een serie indrukwekkende rotspartijen die in combinatie met het kraakheldere azuurblauwe water prachtig zijn om te zien. Een wanderling over vlonderpad dat langs de belangrijkse uitzichtpunten loopt is geweldig om te doen.

At the southernmost tip of the peninsula, not far from Lagos, lies Ponta da Piedade; a series of impressive rock formations that, combined with the crystal-clear azure water, are a magnificent sight. A stroll along the boardwalk that leads past the main viewpoints is a wonderful experience.

50. Benagil cave
Eén van Portugal's beroemste kalksteengrotten is de Benagil cave. De grot is zowel te voet als per boot te bereiken. Helaas waren tijdens ons bezoek boottochtjes volgeboekt en dus restte ons alleen het zicht vanaf boven. Het zicht vanaf de rand naar het verborgen strand onderin de grot was evengoed prachtig.

One of Portugal's most famous limestone caves is the Benagil Cave. The cave is accessible both on foot and by boat. Unfortunately, boat trips were fully booked during our visit, so we only had the view from above. The view from the edge down to the hidden beach at the bottom of the cave was equally stunning.
51. Praia da Marinha
Dit strand behoort van ons betreft zeker in de top 10 van mooiste stranden die we ooit hebben bezocht. De reden hiervoor zijn de kleurrijke kalkstenen rotsformaties. Wandelend over het goudgele zand met aan de ene kant de blauwe zee en aan de andere kant oranje kliffen die hoog boven het strand uittorenen maken het een prachtige locatie. Her en der kun je zelfs via een kleine kloven even tussen de rotsen wandelen. Het licht en de kleuren zijn prachtig en lijken soms een beetje op Bryce Canyon in Amerika.
51. Praia da Marinha
This beach is definitely in our top 10 list of most beautiful beaches we've ever visited. The colorful limestone rock formations are the reason. Strolling along the golden sand, with the blue sea on one side and orange cliffs towering high above the beach on the other, makes it a stunning location. Here and there, you can even walk through small gorges between the rocks. The light and colors are stunning, sometimes reminiscent of Bryce Canyon in America.
53. Fuseta
Authentiek vissersdorpje vissersdorpje gelegen dichtbij een grote lagune. In Fuseta is geen hoogbouw en dat maakt het dorpje extra charmant. Voor wie van zon, zee en strand houdt kan in Fuseta zijn hart op halen. Omdat Fuseta wordt gescheiden van de zee bij een extra zandstrook kent het twee stranden. Eentje aan het water aan de binnenzijde van de zandstrook en eentje aan open zee. De eerste is eenvoudig vanuit het dorp te voet te bereiken. Voor wie naar het zeestrand wil kan de veerboot nemen die regelmatig heen en weer vaart. Hoewel gewoon in verbinding staat met open zee is water aan de binnenzijde van de zandstrook rustig wat het ideaal maakt voor watersporten. Dit water kent wel een sterke getijde. Bij eb valt het voor meer dan de helft droog en kun je bijna naar de overkant lopen.
Vlakbij de stand ligt een grote camping waar we hebben overnacht. Wie van vis houdt kan in Fuseta zijn hart ophalen. In het dorp zijn diverse restaurant die verse vis serveren. Wij hebben hier één van de lekkerste geroosterde visjes ooit gegeten.
53. Fuseta
Authentic fishing village located near a large lagoon. Fuseta has no high-rise buildings, which makes it even more charming. Those who love sun, sea, and sand will find plenty to enjoy in Fuseta. Because Fuseta is separated from the sea by an additional sandy strip, it has two beaches: one on the inner side of the sandy trip and one on the open sea. The first is easily accessible on foot from the village. Those who want to go to the sea beach can take the ferry, which runs regularly. Although iconnected to open sea, the water on the inner side of the sandy strip is calm, making it ideal for water sports. This water does have strong tides though. At low tide, more than half of it is dry, and you can almost walk to the other side. Near the beach is a large campsite where we spent the night. Those who love fish will find plenty to enjoy in Fuseta. There are several restaurants in the village serving fresh fish. We had some of the most delicious grilled fish we've ever had.
54. Mertola
Vanuit Fuseta rijden we via het oosten van Portugal weer richting het noorden. Het is een mooie route door de vallei van Guadiana en over een heuvelachtig landschap met veel graanteelt en boomgaarden met amandelbomen. Het mooiste dorpje langs de route is Mertola. Een klein ommuurd vestingsstadje met witte huizen met rode daken en op de top een Middeleeuws kasteel. Een dorpje waar de Romeinen en Moren duidelijk hun sporen hebben achter gelaten. Het is een leuk dorpje om even doorheen te wandelen.
54. Mertola
From Fuseta, we head north again through eastern Portugal. It's a beautiful route through the Guadiana Valley and across a hilly landscape with abundant grain cultivation and almond orchards. The most beautiful village along the way is Mertola, a small walled town with white houses and red roofs, and a medieval castle at its summit. A village where the Romans and Moors have clearly left their mark. It's a pleasant village to stroll through.
55. Evora
Deze stad is onze laatste overnachting voordat we Portugal weer verlaten. Evora is een stad vol cultuur en historie dat met predicaat Unesco werelderfgoed draagt. De oude gebouwen en monumenten waar de invloeden van de Romeinen en Moren nog duidelijk zichtbaar zijn, de authentieke wit-gele huizen en de imposante stadsmuur geven het historische centrum een bijzondere sfeer.
Enkele plekken die we hebben bezocht zijn:
- Praca do Guraldo, het grote plein in het hart van de oude stad
- Romeinse tempel
- Chapel of Bones, een in de 16e eeuw door monniken gebouwde kapel die versierd is met meer dan 5000 menselijke schedels en beenderen
- Kathedraal, tegen betaling kun je het betegeld dak bezoeken. De architectuur is prachtig en het uitzicht op de erg mooi. Het is de prijs van het entreekaartje meer dan waard. Bezoek je de kathedraal vroeg in de ochtend dan is de stad gehuld is mooi zacht licht.
Tip: voor overheerlijke broodjes, cakes en gebakjes ga je naar Cafe Arcada.
Overnachten hebben we op Camping Orbitur Evora; een fijne camping met zwembad.
55. Evora
This city is our last overnight stay before leaving Portugal. Évora is a city brimming with culture and history, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old buildings and monuments, where the influences of the Romans and Moors are still clearly visible, the authentic white and yellow houses, and the imposing city wall give the historic center a unique atmosphere.
Some of the places we visited include:
- Praca do Guraldo, the large square in the heart of the old town
- Roman temple
- Chapel of Bones, a chapel built by monks in the 16th century and decorated with more than 5,000 human skulls and bones
- Cathedral, whose tiled roof can be visited for a fee. The architecture is magnificent, and the view is stunning. It's well worth the entrance fee. If you visit the cathedral early in the morning, the city is bathed in beautiful soft light.
Tip: For delicious sandwiches, cakes, and pastries, go to Cafe Arcada.
We spent the night at Camping Orbitur Evora, a lovely campsite with a swimming pool.
57. Juromenha
Onderweg naar de Spaanse grens bezoeken we nog een laatste Portugese bezienswaardigheid; het verdedigingswerk Fortaleza de Juromenha. Vanwege de strategische ligging aan de rivier Rio Guadiana, die de natuurlijke grens vormt tussen Spanje en Portugal, was het fort tijdens de onafhankelijksoorlog onderdeel was van de verdedigingslinie.

On our way to the Spanish border, we visit one last Portuguese landmark: the defensive fortress of Fortaleza de Juromenha. Due to its strategic location on the Guadiana River, which forms the natural border between Spain and Portugal, the fortress was part of the defense line during the War of Independence.
60. Valle del Jerte
Vanaf de grens bij Badagoz rijden we dwars door de extremadura, het binnenland van Spanje, terug naar het noorden. Onderdeel van deze route is de scenic drive door de Valle del Jerte. Een schilderachtige route die de stroming van de Rio Jerte volgt. Voornamelijk het 70 kilometer lange deel van Plasencia naar El Barco de Avila (N110) is zeer de moeite waard met prachtige uitzichten. Adembenemend wordt het echter in april wanneer de ontelbare kersenboomgaarden in volle bloei staan.
60. Valle del Jerte
From the border at Badagoz, we drive straight through Extremadura, the Spanish interior, back north. Part of this route is the scenic drive through the Jerte Valley, a picturesque route that follows the course of the Rio Jerte. The 70-kilometer section from Plasencia to El Barco de Avila (N110) is particularly rewarding, offering stunning views. It becomes truly breathtaking in April, when the countless cherry orchards are in full bloom.

Gelegen in het woeste rotsachtige landschap van de Spaanse hoogvlake is het de hoogst gelegen grote stad van Spanje. Avila, dat ook wel de "stad van stenen en heiligen" wordt genoemd heeft het hoogste aantal Romaanse en Gotische kerken per inwoner. Wat als eerste opvalt wanneer je de stad nadert is de imposante Middeleeuwse stadsmuur. Het historische centrum is Unesco werelderfgoed.

Nestled in the rugged, rocky landscape of the Spanish Plateau, it is the highest major city in Spain. Avila, also known as the "city of stones and saints," boasts the highest number of Romanesque and Gothic churches per capita. The first thing you notice as you approach the city is its imposing medieval city wall. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Riaza is een klein authentiek dorpje gelegen in het prachtige berglandschap van centraal Spanje. Het dorpcentrum is weinig meer dan een verzameling traditionale huizen, een kerk en het "Plaza Mayor" het zanderige plein in het hart van het dorp. Het is hier waar het centrale dorpsleven zich afspeelt. Het centrale plein, dat omgeven is door historische gebouwen en gezellige cafés fungeert als sociale ontmoetingsplek voor de locale bevolking en speelt een centrale rol in de locale feesten.
62. Riaza
Riaza is a small, authentic village nestled in the beautiful mountain landscape of central Spain. The village center is little more than a collection of traditional houses, a church, and the "Plaza Mayor", the sandy square at the heart of the village. This is where village life takes place. The central square, surrounded by historic buildings and charming cafés, serves as a social gathering place for locals and plays a central role in local festivals.
63. Arguedas
In de rotswanden aan de rand van het dorp zijn oude rotswoningen. De woningen zijn ontstaan aan het einde van de 19e eeuw toen inwoners die zich geen huis konden veroorloven hier naar toe trokken. Op het hoogtepunt waren er 52 bewoonde grotwoningen. De woningen waren bewoond tot ongeveer de jaren zestig. Aan de voet van de rotswand vind je een camperplaats waar je gratis kunt overnachten. Er zijn hier geen faciliteiten.
64. Bardenas Reales NP
Na een bezoek aan de grotwoningen rijden we door naar het vlakbij gelegen Bardenas Reales. Een Unesco Biosfeer reservaat en voor ons de mooiste plek die we deze vakantie hebben bezocht. Wij houden van dit soort lege landschappen.
Het UNESCO Biosfeer reservaat, Bardenas Reales is een semi woestijn in het noordoosten van Spanje. Het is de grootste woestijn van Europe en een plek van ongekende natuurlijke schoonheid dat bestaat uit ravijnen, hoogvlakten, steile rotsen, bizarre zandstenen rotsformaties en kleipiramides. Ze zijn het resultaat van jarenlange erosie waardoor het terrein is gebeeldhouwd tot een adembenemende mix van kleuren en texturen. Het gebied is een heuse woestijn waar de wereld dor en droog is, de vegetaties schaars en de rivieren maar sporadisch water bevatten. In de zomer kan het er ook heel heet worden. Houdt daar rekening mee mocht je in deze periode de Bardenas willen bezoeken. De Bardenas is te bereiken vanuit zowel het noorden als vanuit het westen (vanuit Arguedas). Vanuit beide richting is de entree gratis. Voor wie het gebied met de auto bezoekt, is er een 34 kilometer lange route. Het is een onverharde maar goede gravel weg langs alle hoogtepunten van het nationaal park. Met regelmatige stops duurt het rondje zo'n 2 tot 3 uur. Houd in het noorden van het park vooral ook de lucht goed in de gaten. Met een beetje geluk kun jje er de grote lammergieren zien rondcirkelen. Let wel: wildkamperen in het nationaal park is streng verboden. Dit wordt ook gecontroleerd.
66. Olite
Charmant dorpje in Navarra beroemd om zijn koninklijk paleis en Middeleeuwse straatjes geplaveid met kinderkopjes en statige oude huizen.
Tip: bij Vidaurre (café en bakkerij) kun je heerlijk ontbijten of lunchen.
63. Arguedas
Ancient cave dwellings are nestled in the rock walls at the edge of the village. These dwellings were built at the end of the 19th century when residents who could not afford housing moved here. At their peak, there were 52 inhabited cave dwellings. The dwellings remained inhabited until about the 1960s. At the foot of the rock face, you'll find a camper site where you can stay overnight for free. There are no facilities here.
64. Bardenas Reales NP
After visiting the cave dwellings, we drive on to the nearby Bardenas Reales. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and, for us, the most beautiful place we visited this holiday. We really love these empty landscapes.
The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Bardenas Reales, is a
semi-desert in northeastern Spain. It is the largest desert in Europe and a place of unparalleled natural beauty, consisting of ravines, plateaus, steep cliffs, bizarre sandstone rock formations, and clay pyramids. They are the result of years of erosion, which has sculpted the terrain into a breathtaking mix of colors and textures. The area is a true desert where the world is arid and dry, vegetation is sparse, and rivers only sporadically run dry. It can also get very hot in summer. Keep this in mind if you plan to visit the Bardenas during this period. The Bardenas is accessible from both the north and the west (from Arguedas). Admission is free from both directions. For those visiting the area by car, there's a 34-kilometer route. It's an unpaved but well-maintained gravel road that passes all the national park's highlights. With regular stops, the route takes about 2 to 3 hours. In the northern part of the park, keep a close eye on the sky. With a bit of luck, you might see the bearded vultures circling overhead. Please note: wild camping in the national park is strictly prohibited and is monitored.
66. Olite
A charming village in Navarre, famous for its royal palace and medieval cobblestone streets lined with stately old houses.
